2025 Teens Dream - Empowering Youth Through Apprenticeships
Education and job training are essential for a successful future, yet many young people around the world struggle to find opportunities that prepare them for meaningful careers. My dream is to create APPrentice, an app that connects students with apprenticeship opportunities in their local communities. This initiative directly supports two United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth). By bridging the gap between education and real-world experience, APPrentice will help young people gain valuable skills while also benefiting local businesses and communities.
One of the biggest challenges facing young people today is the lack of accessible job training. Currently, one in four young people worldwide are not in education, employment, or training. This issue is even more severe for young women, who are more than twice as likely as young men to be in this situation. While schools provide academic knowledge, they often fail to equip students with practical skills needed for employment. Many industries require hands-on experience that cannot be learned in a classroom, leaving students unprepared for the workforce. Apprenticeships offer a solution to this problem by allowing young people to work alongside experienced professionals, gaining real-world skills, mentorship, and career guidance.
Through APPrentice, students would have access to a wide range of apprenticeship opportunities. For example, a student interested in technology could work with a local web developer or IT specialist, gaining hands-on experience in coding and software development. Those passionate about healthcare could assist in clinics or shadow medical professionals, learning essential patient care skills. Students who enjoy working with their hands could explore apprenticeships in skilled trades such as carpentry, plumbing, or auto mechanics. Creative fields like graphic design, photography, and filmmaking could also benefit from mentorship programs. Industries such as hospitality and culinary arts could offer apprenticeships in restaurants, hotels, or event planning. By providing a diverse range of options, APPrentice would help students find meaningful career paths suited to their interests and talents.
The benefits of apprenticeships extend beyond just the students. Young people who participate in these programs gain practical skills, confidence, and mentorship, which help them transition successfully into the workforce. Many apprenticeships lead directly to full-time jobs, reducing youth unemployment and increasing economic stability. However, communities also benefit when they invest in their young people. Local businesses gain enthusiastic and skilled workers, industries grow stronger with properly trained employees, and neighborhoods thrive when young people are engaged and employed. By mentoring the next generation, experienced professionals pass on valuable knowledge and create a cycle of success that benefits everyone.
The vision behind APPrentice aligns with the UN’s mission to promote inclusive education and sustainable economic growth. SDG 4 emphasizes the need for accessible and quality education, while SDG 8 focuses on creating employment opportunities and fostering economic growth. By providing a free and easy-to-use platform for connecting students with apprenticeships, APPrentice directly supports these goals. The app would ensure that young people—regardless of their background—have access to career training that prepares them for the future.
Investing in youth is one of the most powerful ways to build a better world. When we give young people the tools to succeed, we not only improve their individual lives but also strengthen entire communities. My dream to create APPrentice is about more than just an app—it is a movement to create a world where every young person has the opportunity to learn, grow, and contribute. By supporting apprenticeships we can build a brighter, more sustainable future for generations to come.
