Sara Barhoum- UN SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and Production- Teens Dream Challenge 2026
As a teen, I dream of an equal life for everyone. Food is a basic living need, and everyone has the right to have clean, healthy food. According to a recent study by the united nations, 1/3 of total food waste is lost from farm to fork. That is a big number! And from here my idea sparks: The bio digester. I designed this solution around a strong hypothesis suggesting that if residents are provided with redeemable and tangible incentives (like the bio tokens participants will receive as they contribute in providing their food scraps to put into the bio digester that then will be traded for a share of fertilizers), then the waste diversion rate will increase by at least 50% within the first 6 months of implementing into a pilot neighborhood. This aligns with SDG 12, Target 12.3 regarding food waste. I hope that this dream of mine creates a great impact on the society, by decreasing food waste and increasing harvest as a result of the Bio digester, leading to everyone receiving their rights and equality in this life.
