Teen's Dream

As a teenager growing up in Trinidad and Tobago I am seeing far too many of my peers falling prey to guns, gangs and drugs. It saddens me to see the youth of the nation, becoming victims and perpetrators of violent crimes, mainly because of poverty, illiteracy and community disorganization. The Youth Ambassadors Program which i participated in is a great initiative taken by the US Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs to promote positive change by equipping youths with opportunities to further develop their interests, support deeper understanding of Caribbean connectivity and link education with sustainable development. I believe that my participation in this mentorship program will enable me with the ability to enact positive change, participate in nation building and the power to change the world one mind at a time. Through this program I would be able to appreciate and understand my civic responsibility, human rights and transfer the knowledge to those I come in contact with. It is my view that each citizen should have the right to civic education, with the acquired knowledge and experience I would take my proposal for civic education and sustainable development to be mandatory to the Ministry of Education, being part in this program would help me in doing my part to achieve social justice and eradicate some societal ills. Through my eyes, my country’s education system is just as Albert Einstein described as one which judges a fish by its ability to climb a tree. I would like to change my country’s education system to create a diverse learning forum. By allowing me this opportunity it will increase my appreciation and understanding of the Caribbean’s rich multiculturalism. My aim is to become a Human Rights Officer working in the United Nations to create policies to protect young children, promote social progress and better living standards. Women education is an issue i wish to bring to the forefront.
