Teen's Dream

My teen dream is to make reusable pads more accessible to those around the globe because it could be a lower-cost and more sustainable way to prevent period poverty. If recycled cotton-based menstrual products were available, we could make reusable pads so there would be a cheaper alternative to the common-period products of today. With textiles being one of the most common items sitting in landfills, companies or charities could instead collect donations to make reusable pads. Thanks to the low cost of production, it would allow for these products to be widely distributed. The fact that these pads are reusable would help those who are struggling financially have an affordable option that would not require consistent payments on period products. Because all that is truly necessary to clean a reusable pad is cold water, these products could be distributed around the world, and with women around the world having these hygienic necessities, it will hopefully be a monumental step towards gender equality. Having a solution to provide females with menstrual products would mainly help with three of the UN Gender Equality Goal targets. These goals are providing materials to support women’s reproductive health, which is goal 5.6, enabling women to fully participate in education/economic opportunities, which is goal 5.5, and eliminating the need for women to obtain reproductive materials through means of sexual exploitation which would address goal 5.2. In essence, if there was a line of cheap, reusable, and sanitary pads that were available to all social classes around the world(through either means of charity distribution or economic convenience), it would allow women to partake in a more equitable society.
